Place ideally one hammer and one nail before you on the table. Real objects make it easier to grasp proportions, materials, shadowing and light points. Alternatively, you can also use a photo. First draw the outline of the hammer on the watercolour paper with warm grey V 274. Then work out the hammer head with black 199, also using walnut brown 177 on the edges. Use warm grey V 274 where the surfaces of the hammer head are bent and the metal reflects the light. Apply walnut brown 177, burnt ochre 187 and Venetian red 190 to the wooden handle. You may press the pencil a bit harder into the paper for the wood grain so that the lines keep better after blending.

To finish, apply highlights to the hammer head and wooden handle with white 101. Apply white pigment and blend carefully. Work texture into the metal with walnut brown 177. Draw the nail with warm grey V 274 and black 199 and blend with the brush. To finish, apply shadows with warm grey V 274. To do so, either apply a fine layer of paint with the dry watercolour pencil, which you then blend with the water brush or directly remove pigment from the pencil tip with the moistened brush and apply the wet paint to the paper.
